What is Extended DISC Behavioural Profiling?

Does the term Extended DISC Behavioural Profiling take you straight to The Silence of the Lambs?

Um, no… me neither… well, that’s not strictly true. For many years I thought profiling was something that we only did to find serial killers. At best I thought it was the tortuous ten minutes you spend for an online job application, trying to guess the specific combination of traits they are looking for (but never hear back about anyways).

And so for a long time it was a world into which I had no insight or experience.

In 2013 when I was training to be a coach, I discovered E-DISC behavioural profiling, and boy did I fall in love!
I dove right in and became an Internationally Certified Extended DISC Consultant & Trainer.

In a nutshell, e-DISC is an online quiz that helps you to identify your behavioural style. It is short cut to help you very quickly understand how you are motivated, what you are good at, where your challenges will lie, and how you are generally perceived by others.

This tool is used in over 55 countries around the world and has been completed by tens of thousands of respondents.

In other news, the original elements for the profile were taken from the work of Carl Jung, and further developed into a four quadrant model by William Moulton-Marston. He is the inventor of the lie detector, and Wonder Woman comic books!

“And how is it different to the normal version of DISC?” I hear you ask.

In the bog standard version of DISC you are assessed for your adaptive style. That means you will get a result that is based on the way that you navigate & behave in the world. The problem with that, is that many people behave in a way that is not their natural style. Imagine that you are in a competitive workplace; your behaviour will naturally favour a results based driven style. Or perhaps you spend a lot of time doing very detailed work, your behaviour will suggest that you are slow & meticulous.

Where e-DISC is different is that you will get a result that shows both your natural AND your adaptive styles. That allows us to see whether or not the environment you are in is a good fit for you, or whether we need to develop better strategies for you to thrive.

Yep! Sure is! e-DISC is a tool that is primarily used in a business context. It helps in the recruitment process, to enhance communication & collaboration, and to educate individuals on how to better work with others. That could be in sales, leadership, team work, and any other application you can think of.

I have been using e-DISC in my work with couples since 2013 and I find it so powerful & insightful.

I love it because people often have a skewed or inaccurate perception of themselves. People are so  intimately entangled in their own web of fears, hopes and dreams. How could you possibly see all your strengths when they seem so obvious? How could you know all your weaknesses without some external reflection of those?

When I work with a couple this is the fast track to provide a full picture each individual;

  • how they are typically perceived by others
  • their strengths
  • what motivates them
  • areas that require development
  • things that reduce their motivation
  • the role they play in a team
  • time management style
  • communication style
  • management/leadership style
  • causes of stress
  • signs of stress
  • how to release stress

Imagine that you were handed a manual for how to understand your partner, and that you could work together by sharing your manuals to identify your strengths as a team, your blind spots, your differences (individual strengths) and how to develop your skills to work together more harmoniously. Magic you say? Sure is!

If you, like the esteemed Dr Lector, find this kind of assessment to be a drag… “A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti” … then p’raps this is not for you… If you are interested in checking out a report, you can head here to the FinxS page (this is the specific report I use) and check out their samples.

Behavioural Profiling has had a profound impact on my life, and on the lives on my clients. e-DISC is a multi layered process that begins in our sessions, and continues for many years for those with the desire for personal development.
